Aromatherapy for me has been a very personal journey, and it is the reason why I trained as a beauty therapist over 20 years ago.
There is no doubt that aromatherapy oils smell lovely but do they really have a physical effect on the body? I believe they do.
Just inhaling essential oils can have an immediate effect on the emotions and senses.
These are a few examples - calming and soothing when stressed – lavender, rose, chamomile or geranium, or for mind clearing and mental fatigue- basil, rosemary and peppermint can be very stimulating and wake you up, especially on a long drive, or lime and lemon to control nausea ( this is great for sea sickness!). Just smelling these oils can have an amazing effect.
Aromatherapy oils can also be used topically for skincare; for healing spots, insect bites, minor burns, wasp and bee stings – tea tree oil, a very powerful natural antiseptic; for skin rejuvenation, fine lines, dry skin – frankincence, myrrh, jasmine and neroli; for oily, combination skin – bergamot, geranium, sandalwood.
Useful oils for body treatments: for aches and pains – lavender, marjoram and rosemary, and for cellulite and water retention – juniper, cypress, lemon, which are very stimulating.
One of the best ways to realise the full effect of essential oils is to have a full body treatment, either a massage from a qualified aromatherapist, who will blend oils for you, or at home, in the bath. For home treatment, use a pre-blended bath oil, or an oil that has been blended for you.
Bathing using essential oils is very effective, as you get the benefit of the hydrotherapy and aromatherapy. It is advisable to remain in the bath for at least 20 minutes to allow the oils to enter the body through absorption into the skin via the hair follicles and by breathing in through the lungs.
As most people shower these days, it is important to remember that bathing is a great way to enhance a good night’s sleep, especially using relaxing aromatherapy oils. It really works!!
Try to use essential oils in your everyday life as a way of enhancing your natural health – they are a gift of nature, and quite often can be just as effective as a pill.
